Marshall Mabry - Undignified Worshiper of Jesus Christ

Some worship thoughts for followers of Jesus Christ!

Biblical Fasting

When Jesus spoke about fasting, he didn’t say if you fast, but “when you fast” (Matthew 6:16).

“Then the followers of John came to Jesus and said, ‘Why do we and the Pharisees often fast for a certain time, but your followers don’t?’ Jesus answered, ‘The friends of the bridegroom are not sad while he is with them. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast.'” (Matthew 9:14-15).

Fasting does not impress God with our spirituality to the point that he ignores our disobedience. On the contrary, genuine fasting will always cause us to examine our hearts to make sure everything is right with Him. (Isaiah 58)

Several years ago, during a fast, God told me fasting was about “denying my flesh to strengthen my spirit.”

It’s not about dieting, it’s not about looking religious (hypocrisy), and it’s not about trying to do something religious in order to manipulate God. (I have tried this — I accomplished nothing.)

When the Bible uses the term “fasting” it has spiritual goals in mind.

Biblical fasting is “not eating” with spiritual communication in mind. You can pray without fasting, but you cannot fast without praying. Biblical fasting is deliberately abstaining from food for a spiritual reason: communication and relationship with the Father.

Fasting is a physical discipline necessary at times for holiness. Our relationship with our Heavenly Father is only as good as our communication with Him. Sometimes during our service to the Lord, the noise of sin in this world can dampen His voice. We are constantly bombarded with temptation and the desires of our flesh. Gluttony and Sex run rabid in our world. Not to mention, gluttony carries over into other areas of sin such as greed and materialism. God wants us to live in moderation – with temperance, restraint, and self-control. God wants us to live in peace. Pride and greed can not have a foothold in our lives physically or spiritually.

Fasting is a way for me to tell my flesh “No!” because I need a better relationship with my Father. I need to clearly hear Him. We must all realize there are something’s we can not accomplish by prayer alone. We need His divine direction, protection, healing, and revelation that can only be brought about through prayer and fasting.

We need to always be very aware of what we ask of Him — even in our songs and hymns: I surrender all (Do we really?) Just a closer walk (Are we ready for where that closeness will take us?)

By God’s Mercy, I will “offer my body up as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to the Lord.”

“When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you” (Jeremiah 29:13,14). Fasting is an expression of wholeheartedness. This is clear from Joel’s call to the nation of Israel: “Yet even now,” says the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting. . .” (Joel 2:12).

Wired for Pleasure

(from devotion published June 4, 2006)

God created the world for our pleasure. He created us for His pleasure. His Word says that He delights in us. Enjoying pleasure is part of how He wired us. It is not a sin to desire pleasure. It, like everything else, must be kept in balance. As long as it does not become an idol, as long as it does not take us out of worshiping Jesus Christ, as long as it does not make us disobedient, it is fine. God gave us the capacity to enjoy His creation as a gift. It is natural to desire pleasure.

King David said, “I will take pleasure in your laws and remember your words.” (Psalm 119:16) ‘I enjoy pleasing you. Your Law is in my heart.’ (Psalm 40:8) Pleasure is needed to refresh the soul, mind, and body. We need to take great pleasure in our worship and praise to Him. “I enjoy praising your name to the music of harps, because everything you do makes me happy, and I sing joyful songs.” (Psalm 92:3- 4)

We are to take pleasure in all the gifts that God blesses us with; especially in His creation. Our lives, our spouses, our children, our family, our church, our work, etc. are all good and perfect gifts from our loving, Father of Lights. Nonetheless, we must be careful not to worship the creations made with our own hands. Many people are lulled into idol worship by the creativity of Man. We must stay focused on the effects of eternal value not temporal. “Warn the rich people of this world not to be proud or to trust in wealth that is easily lost. Tell them to have faith in God, who is rich and blesses us with everything we need to enjoy life.” (1Timothy 6:17)

Ignite!

We need revival! Today! Now!
Don’t let apathy and comfort steal your light.
Grace has been presented. Walk in it. Dance with it. But, work through it as well.
There is a broken, lost and dying world out there.
To be content just passing the days in safety is shallow and temporal minded.
Take risks in faith.
Start on your knees, stand, and let God’s love move you into action.

A Psalm of Worship

Blessed are You, Heavenly Father!
Holy, Uncreated One!
You were, You are, and You will ever be!
Lord of All, everything seen and unseen, known and unknown
You knew me from the beginning
O Faithful Provider!
What beautiful, marvelous plans you have for me!
To give me hope and a future.
My hope, My Savior, My Lord Jesus
My future is You O Lord!
Nothing else is sweeter.
Nothing compares to the portion I have in You.
Endless days in the care of Your majesty, Glory, Power, and Your measureless beauty
Forever dwelling in the house of the Lord.

Not of This World

As Christian disciples we are to teach all of Christ’s commandments in love. We are to partner with receiving, repented sinners, and not with the world! We are to go to the world and proclaim His Gospel, but not be part of the world. Though everyone needs to hear the Gospel, not everyone is going to listen to His message. We will know when to “shake the dust off” and move on. The Church is responsible for seeking and developing Christ followers. Remembering that each man’s walk with Christ is a personal journey with the Bible as his compass. His relationship with Christ is unique to him alone. For only a man and God can know what is in his heart.

The true evidence of our worship is seen within our obedience to His commandments. Jesus said, “if you love me, you will obey my commands.” Furthermore Jesus said, “48 …Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:48-50)

A Psalm of Worship: More Than Life

Teach me O Lord of the infinite freedom found in Your grace.
Show me the beauty of Your tender mercy
Let me experience the wonders of Your boundless Love.
Let me tremble at the awesome power of Your righteous justice.
You love me more than I can imagine
More than I can measure in thought, word, and deed
I am not known to you because of my ignorance of justice
I am not known to you because of my ignorance of the Truth
You know me because of Your mercy and love,
but most of all because of my hearts’ willingness to give away Your grace

I praise You! My Lord, my King, my Savior!
Hallelujah! Jesus Christ is Lord of all!

Love Thy Neighbor

Does my neighbor know me?
Have I shown him love?
Have I given him peace?
Have I danced and ate with him?
Have I played with him?
Have I sang songs and rejoiced with him?

Do I love my neighbor?
Do I know his pain?
Do I see his condition?
Have I healed his wounds?
Have I carried him to safety?
Have I sacrificed myself for him?

Have I given him the thing most dear to me —
My life, my God, my Savior, my Jesus?

My Father is Worthy

Who in heaven is like You, Holy Father!
Worthy of all blessing, honor, glory and power
O that I had the faith to shine through deepest trial
That no matter how hard the world beat me
I would not embarrass You, My God!
I will celebrate Your goodness which such passion,
that everyone would be amazed and honor You
I will sing of your faithfulness
I will dance because of Your grace
and I will cry out for Your great mercy
My ill-equip words could never contain You
But, I will still sing
And I will still shout
And I will dance because of Your love.

Prayer of Dependence

Father God!
We are dependent upon You
We are helpless and broken in spirit
We are desperate beggars for Your perfect provision
Only in You will we find true peace and comfort
Only in You we find love, mercy and grace
We come to Your throne of grace, not in our power, but by the authority of the blood of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ
Whom You have given all power and authority over us
It is by power of His Name and through Him we petition for Your mercy to cleanse us of inequity
It is by power of His Name we ask for You to heal our wounds
It is by power of His Name we ask for Your peace to comfort us
It is by power of His Name we ask for wisdom to do the things we can do to testify to His glory
It is by power of His Name we ask for increased faith to trust You in and through all things
May we give you honor and glory through our valleys of despair and our mountain-tops of joy

We praise You! Father God!
We praise You! Holy Spirit!
We praise You! Jesus! Son of God! Savior of sinners!

In Jesus’ Wonderful Name we pray,
Amen

A Psalm of Worship

O Lord do not let me wear a robe of heaviness for fear of the future
Anoint my head with the oil of gladness
You are in control of all things
Let me dance and sing of Your wonders
Let me run free in the beauty and joy You have set before me
Let the work of my hands shine and glorify You
May everything that I am speak of You
Through strength in humility and mercy in victory
You alone are my Shepherd, my shield, my refuge
I will not find comfort or contentment in anything of the world
It does not know me
You have shown me love
O How much You love me
O Lord, silence my doubt with songs of love, faith and hope
Knowing Your love is my portion
Knowing You is enough
